Nobody just wakes up far from Allah

On the small steps that carry us further than we intended to go.

Worth sitting with: The heart changes slowly, in both directions. Which means the same patience that brings us back can also carry us away — one small step at a time.

Nobody wakes up one day and decides to drift. There is no single morning where someone opens their eyes and chooses distance from Allah over closeness. It does not happen like that.

It happens in the accumulation of small things. And that is what makes it easy to miss.

What the drift actually looks like

It starts quietly. The playlist changes. The content you scroll through shifts, gradually, toward things that feel more entertaining and less nourishing. The salah you used to take your time with gets rushed, then shortened in your mind, then occasionally skipped because the day got away from you.

The conversations you used to have — about deen, about meaning, about what you actually want from this life — happen less. The friends who brought out the better version of you see you less. The ones who do not, see you more.

None of it feels like a decision. It feels like life. And that is the danger.

Small steps were always the point

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are small." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464)

This is usually quoted about building good habits, and rightly so. But the same principle works in reverse. Small consistent movements away from Allah accumulate just as surely as small consistent movements toward Him.

A single skipped prayer is not a crisis. But a pattern of skipped prayers, accepted without reflection, is a direction. A single harmful conversation is not a disaster. But a friendship built entirely on gossip and complaint becomes the environment your heart lives in.

A question worth sitting with: Is there an area of your life where you have been moving in a direction without quite deciding to? What small thing began it?

The mercy in noticing

The fact that the drift is gradual is not only a danger. It is also a mercy. Because the return works the same way.

You do not have to overhaul everything in a single day. You do not have to go from wherever you are to where you want to be in one enormous leap. You simply have to notice, name it without catastrophising it, and take one small step back.

One prayer given proper attention. One conversation replaced with something better. One piece of content put down and something more nourishing picked up instead. These are not dramatic acts of devotion. They are the beginning of a direction change.

Allah does not require perfection. He responds to turning. "Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant." (Qur'an 2:222) The tawwab, the one who keeps coming back, is beloved to Him. Not the one who never slipped, but the one who kept returning.

On the environment you live in

The people around you matter more than most productivity advice acknowledges. The Prophet, peace be upon him, compared a good companion to a seller of musk — even if you buy nothing, you leave carrying the fragrance. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2101)

If the environment you spend most of your time in — online or offline — consistently pulls you away from who you want to be, that is worth taking seriously. Not as a reason for guilt, but as useful information about where the drift is being fed from.

The goal is not to surround yourself only with people who have it all figured out. It is to spend enough time around goodness that goodness starts to feel normal again.

A final reflection

Nobody wakes up far from Allah. But many people do look up one day and realise, with some surprise, that the gap between them and their deen has quietly grown.

If that is where you are, you are not too far to come back. You were never too far to come back. The distance that opened slowly can close the same way — one small, deliberate step at a time.

And Allah is closer to you than you think.
