Khimars: what they actually are, and how to choose one that lasts

Modestwear

Understanding the piece that holds your modest look together, and how to invest in one well.

A quiet observation: A good khimar is the difference between feeling put together and adjusting your fit all day.

If you have ever spent half a day tying a slipping khimar, or noticed your fabric pilling after only a few wears, you already know that not every khimar is created equally.

For many Muslim women, the khimar is the most worn piece in their wardrobe. It is what we reach for daily, what we travel in, what we pray in. And yet, it is often the piece we put the least thought into when buying.

Here is what is worth knowing before your next purchase.

What a khimar actually is

A khimar is a head and chest covering that drapes down over the bust and shoulders. It is referenced directly in the Qur'an in Surah An-Nur, where Allah instructs the believing women to draw their khumur over their chests.

The khimar is designed to cover both the head and the chest in one piece. The result is fuller coverage with far less fuss than a scarf/shayla, since there is nothing to wrap, pin, or constantly adjust.

The fabric matters more than you think

The single biggest difference between a khimar that lasts and one that does not is the fabric.

Nidha is breathable, soft, and holds its shape without clinging. It drapes beautifully and feels gentle against the skin, which is why it has become a quiet favourite among sisters who wear khimars daily.

Matte fabrics offer a similar coverage with a slightly different finish, often a touch more structured. Chiffon is lighter and more delicate, suited to occasions rather than daily wear.

A gentle reminder: If your khimar feels uncomfortable after an hour, the fabric is the first thing to look at.

The length question

Khimars come in different lengths, often labelled as medium, large, and extra large. The right length depends on what you want from it.

A medium khimar falls to around the waist or hip. It is easy to wear, layers well under jilbabs, and works for everyday errands and indoor settings.

A large or extra large khimar falls past the hip, sometimes to the knee or below. It offers fuller coverage, drapes more dramatically, and is often the go-to for prayer, outings, and times when you want more presence in your modest look.

Neither is more correct than the other. They simply serve different moments in your day.

The cut and shape

The way a khimar is cut affects how it sits on you. A diamond cut creates softer angles and tends to be the most flattering across body shapes. Other cuts offer more structured drapes or a more streamlined silhouette.

If you wear khimars often, having a couple of cuts in your wardrobe gives you variety without compromising on modesty.

Signs of a quality khimar

A well-made khimar should feel substantial but not heavy. The stitching should be even and not loose. The fabric should drape rather than cling. The neckline should sit comfortably without pulling.

It should look as good on wash number twenty as it did on day one. That is the test of an investment piece.

A quiet truth: One well-made khimar will outlast five cheaper ones, and feel better every single day in between.

A final reflection

Buying a good khimar is not about indulgence. It is about respecting a piece of clothing that you wear in worship, in public, and in private. It is about removing the friction between you and your day.

May Allah make our clothing a means of ease, a means of modesty, and a means of remembrance.
